Karen Mulvaney of Coldwell Banker is proud to present to market this magnificent detached home in the most idyllic of settings. A masterpiece of architecture.
Designed by well-known architects from Cologne; Joachim und Margot Schürmann in 1964 for his Brother Werner Schürmann and his wife Gerda Froemel, both sculptors. This was the most austerely beautiful house of their career. Built by hand and without machinery the two Brothers salvaged many materials to create Bauhaus including salvaged brick and old lamp posts surrounding the atrium.
The wish to provide as much shelter as possible for outdoor living led to the basic concept of the design; to build a totally introverted house in which to live and work, anchored by walls rising directly out of the otherwise untouched landscape. The heart of the house is an atrium. Without many windows externally all, of the house looks into the magnificent atrium at the centre. Slanted roofs slope inwards, with rainwater draining from the roof into the middle of the atrium. No gutters. There is a 16 square foot opening to the sky, around which the shared life of the inhabitants revolves and is on constant display. With the exception of a 12 feet-wide strip along the north-east side of the house, reserved for work and Master bedroom, the entire interior is one continuous open plan without corridors. The studio is the only room that faces outwards.
When the electric gates open and Bauhaus is revealed you are instantly taken aback. When you enter the house itself, it takes your breath away. Accommodation briefly includes; spacious hallway, cloakroom, w.c. Through glass doors to the left is the exceptionally large living room overlooking the atrium with access via large sliding doors. Off the living room there is access to the Master suite, one of very few rooms not to overlook the atrium but from the walk-in wardrobe and large bathroom there is a door that leads you directly there.
From the hall straight through glass doors leads to a large kitchen with top of the range units and finishes and dining area. All overlooking the atrium. Past some floating sliding doors there is a second fully equipped kitchen, ideal for large entertaining events. There is a door leading outside from here.
Bedroom 3 is beyond the kitchen/dining room. The main bathroom here has stunning feature sink and shower. Bedroom 1 & 2 are interconnected by sliding opaque glass doors. Both rooms can almost be one and also open up to the atrium.
From the atrium itself a door leads down steps to Gerda's studio. A stunning room with windows that reach to the sky, a truly inspirational space. Rather than going through the house and atrium there is also access to outside via gates.
If you walk the perimeter of the house toward the north-east side there are another set of gates which lead directly into the completely self-contained one-bedroom apartment. Large living room, fully fitted kitchen, utility room, boiler house, bathroom and bedroom complete the picture.
Flooring throughout the house is either an aged fossil limestone tile or wooden flooring.
